Google has announced game-changing updates to its AI-optimized cloud, featuring fifth-generation TPUs and NVIDIA H100 GPUs. Companies like Gridspace have reported a 5x increase in AI model training speed using the TPU v5e. This move highlights the demands of generative AI and large language models, which have seen their ‘parameters’ increase tenfold annually. Another notable advancement is the introduction of Multislice technology, which supports scaling of AI models beyond the physical limits of TPU pods. This capability is expected to materially boost Google Cloud’s performance. Lastly, as Google and other hyperscalers industrialize, it is increasingly evident that compute is migrating to regional hubs of power with friendly development environments. These hubs are revitalizing our industrial stock and evolving into the central backbone of our modern compute industry.
Data Center Decisions: Building vs. Leasing Data Center Space
In the current IT environment, there are a number of considerations that data center service providers must make. Among the most important is the decision to build a company-owned facility or lease wholesale space in another vendor's data center. There are significant benefits to both sides of this argument which can make it difficult to choose.Building A Data Center: Top Advantages Of Owning A Facility When companies build their own data centers, they have complete control over nearly every aspect - from the overall facility designs down to the granular operational details like temperature and asset access. Frankfurt Data Center Continues SoftLayer's Global Cloud Expansion
IBM announced in early January that it is continuing its global cloud services expansion by opening a Germany data center. The Frankfurt data center is the company's first SoftLayer facility in the country and is part of an overall $1.2 billion investment by IBM to widen the reach of its cloud network. The new facility will provide support to other SoftLayer sites in Europe, including a London data center, Paris data center and Amsterdam data center. The site's location in Germany allows IBM to provide businesses in the area with a local facility that meets strict German and European security...
Modular Pennsylvania data center opened by Keystone
A Pennsylvania data center has just been opened in the beginning of January by Keystone NAP. This new data center, bordering Pennsylvania and New Jersey in Bucks County, uses the a new "KeyBlock" system for its servers. These are stackable, configurable modules that can be stacked on each other in order to provide efficient server power that is easily scalable for clients. These customizable units include not only servers, but also power infrastructure and cooling implements designed to work with the processors contained within the unit. The data center itself is finding a home within the former motor room of a...

Japan Data Center Opened By IBM SoftLayer
IBM announced in late December that it has opened its first Japanese Softlayer facility with a Tokyo data center. The site will serve to complement Softlayer resources in other Asia-Pacific locations, including Singapore and Hong Kong. The new construction will also broaden options for data redundancy and geographic diversity within IBM's growing worldwide data center network. The Tokyo data center offers 10Gbps connections to SoftLayer services, as well as latency from the Hong Kong data center of less than 50 milliseconds and less than 270 milliseconds from other global SoftLayer facilities. Creating a Japan data center also offers Big Blue the opportunity to...
