Google has announced game-changing updates to its AI-optimized cloud, featuring fifth-generation TPUs and NVIDIA H100 GPUs. Companies like Gridspace have reported a 5x increase in AI model training speed using the TPU v5e. This move highlights the demands of generative AI and large language models, which have seen their ‘parameters’ increase tenfold annually. Another notable advancement is the introduction of Multislice technology, which supports scaling of AI models beyond the physical limits of TPU pods. This capability is expected to materially boost Google Cloud’s performance. Lastly, as Google and other hyperscalers industrialize, it is increasingly evident that compute is migrating to regional hubs of power with friendly development environments. Mexico Data Center Latest Opening For SoftLayer
IBM took another step in the expansion of its SoftLayer portfolio with the opening of its first Mexico data center.The new facility is located just outside of Mexico City in Querétaro. IBM hopes to strengthen its Latin American cloud presence, significantly increasing the data resiliency it will be able to provide its customers in the region. Nevada Data Center Announced By Switch
Las Vegas-based data center provider Switch announced plans for a $1 billion SUPERNAP 9 Reno data center.This 1,000-acre center will feature eBay Inc. as its anchor tenant, and was announced by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval in mid-January. Data Center Finance: Citrix Acquires Sanbolic
Citrix announced in early January that it had completed the acquisition of storage virtualization technology firm Sanbolic.The technology created by Sanbolic focuses on workload-oriented storage virtualization, enabling customers to optimize the delivery of application-specific workloads. Citrix hopes that the acquisition will allow them to develop a more robust range of differentiated solutions. Scotland Data Center Under Construction for Brightsolid
Brightsolid has begun constructing a $8 million Scotland data center on the east coast in Aberdeen. The facility is slated to be completed by April 2015. Brightsolid is a subsidiary of British publishing house DC Thompson, known most famously in the United States for Dennis the Menace. Dutch Data Center Association Formed
Some of the biggest Netherlands data center service providers joined together in early January to form an organization with the goal of representing the interests of the Dutch data center industry with local and international stakeholders and sharing important information among member organizations.The Dutch Datacenter Association was founded at the beginning of 2015 and already has the support of 20 data center service providers and telecoms in the Netherlands.
