Data Center Finance: NTT Communications Acquires Majority Stake in e-shelter

At the beginning of March, NTT Communications announced it had acquired a majority stake in Germany's top data center service provider, e-shelter. The agreement provides for NTT Communications to own 86.7 percent of e-shelter's issued shares, making NTT the third largest owner of Europe data center space.

Currently, e-shelter operates four German data centers as well as facilities in Zurich, Switzerland, Vienna and Austria. Its structures total more than 968,000 square feet of space. Its flagship facility, dubbed Campus Frankfurt 1, is considered the largest data center in Europe with more than 645,000 square feet of space spread across five buildings acting as individual data centers.

NTT also has a network of data centers under its control, including U.K data centers, France data centers, Germany data centers and Spain data centers. The addition of e-shelter's Europe data centers will complement the company's current footprint, and help NTT meet growing demands for data center, cloud and migration services in the region.

"We look forward to expanding our share of the EU's overall ICT market in partnership with this potent company," said Akira Arima, NTT Communications president and CEO. "We will continue to invest in data centers to help our clients secure their data."

As part of the acquisition, e-shelter will be brought into the NTT Com group fold, and will have access to NTT's global data center infrastructure, which includes more than 130 facilities. e-shelter's existing customers – including major multinational enterprises in the finance, communication networks, government and healthcare industries – will also benefit from this increased data center access.

"As our multinational customers expand beyond EU borders, and undergo rapid ICT evolutions, they are increasingly demanding globally seamless ICT solutions," said e-shelter CEO Rupprecht Rittweger. "To meet their demands ahead of our competitors, we believe that the best way to ensure e-shelter's growth and development is in partnership with NTT Com, which has a commanding presence in Asia and is a leading provider of ICT services worldwide."
