Google has announced game-changing updates to its AI-optimized cloud, featuring fifth-generation TPUs and NVIDIA H100 GPUs. Companies like Gridspace have reported a 5x increase in AI model training speed using the TPU v5e. This move highlights the demands of generative AI and large language models, which have seen their ‘parameters’ increase tenfold annually. Another notable advancement is the introduction of Multislice technology, which supports scaling of AI models beyond the physical limits of TPU pods. This capability is expected to materially boost Google Cloud’s performance. Lastly, as Google and other hyperscalers industrialize, it is increasingly evident that compute is migrating to regional hubs of power with friendly development environments. Data Center Finance: Control of Hibernia Atlantic Cable System Changes Hands
A document filed with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in early October revealed that control of the cable landing license for the Hibernia Atlantic Cable System is changing hands. According to the FCC filing, Columbia Venture Corporation has applied to transfer rights to the system's landing license over to Murosa Development. Once the transfer is complete, Columbia Venture will hold a 49 percent stake in the Hibernia Atlantic Cable System, while the remaining 51 percent will be controlled by Murosa Development. New Jersey Modular Data Center Expansion Planned for Sentinel Data Centers
Sentinel Data Centers kicked off October by announcing plans to significantly expand its Somerset, New Jersey data center. The expansion will create an additional 200,000 gross square feet and 20 MW of critical load. The facility currently consists of 230,000 square feet and is nearing capacity. Sentinel's New Jersey data center was originally built as a modular data center, enabling clients to customize the power densities and resiliency levels on a granular basis within their own dedicated suites. German Data Centers Planned for Oracle
Oracle announced in late September that it plans to open two new German data centers in an effort to meet customers' requirements for cloud security and privacy. The company is planning a Munich data center and a Frankfurt data center, adding to the tech giant's existing portfolio of 19 facilities around the world, including three others in Europe.Oracle said it will operate a primary data center in Interxion's Frankfurt facility and a secondary site in an Equinix Munich facility. Dallas Data Center Opened By QTS
Quality Technology Services announced it will be opening the doors of its Dallas data center in mid-October. The 700,000 square-foot facility was converted from a former semiconductor plant and sits on a campus totaling 40 acres.The company has the capacity to expand the Texas data center to include an additional 1.4 million square feet, double its original size, if the need presents itself in the future.
